Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers support programs and activities that would not otherwise be possible at NAC. They are an integral part of the agency, lending their skills, enthusiasm, and care. Some volunteer opportunities are ongoing commitments and others are one-time events.

Volunteer for Special Events

NAC holds many events throughout the year that depend on volunteer assistance to help with event set-up, work one-on-one with children, and facilitate activities. They include:

  • Back-to-School
  • Fall Festival
  • Halloween
  • NAC Holiday Party
  • Book Fair
  • NAC Kids Olympics

NAC mentors have the opportunity to develop a rich, meaningful relationship with a child or teen. They are friends, role models, and confidants. Mentors and mentees participate in a variety of activities, trips, and learning experiences together. Meaningful guidance and support from an adult outside the family can help build self-esteem and be a catalyst for adolescent growth. There is a strong association between early mentoring and "thriving" into adulthood. NAC offers two Mentoring groups, one for "pre-teens" and one for "teens" which take place on alternating Wednesdays, from 5:30-7pm.

NAC tutors are matched with a student with whom they meet once a week, from 5-7pm, either in our Manhattan or Bronx office. While homework is the first thing our students work on when they come in for tutoring, there are also lesson plans, based on the needs of the student for the children to move through with the support of their tutor. Many of our children are significantly behind grade level in their reading skills, making literacy one of our main goals.

Animal Assisted Therapy

Do you have a certified, trained Therapy Dog? Become a Pet Therapy Volunteer Team and bring your dog for two hours of petting and unconditional love with our children. The AAT Program meets on bi-weekly Thursdays, from 5-7pm. The program includes creating dog-centered art, playing dog-themed games, and cuddling up with NAC children to listen to stories about animals and the natural world.

Recreational Day Trips

Recreation trips take place on Saturdays during the school year and on weekdays during school vacations. In winter months volunteers may accompany NAC children and staff to museums, the theater, movies, bowling or ice-skating.  Summer outings include waterparks, nature walks, baseball games, and other outdoor events. Volunteers lead and enhance the experience for all involved.

Share Your Skills

Do you have a skill or talent that you can share with NAC children? Over the years volunteers have taught yoga and dance classes; assisted with resume writing and interview practice; led programs about money management, and provided make-overs for NAC teenagers.
